About Me

Angelina (1991) is an investigative journalist from Uruguay.

Over the last few years, she has reported on the setbacks in the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people in Latin America, with a focus on the intersecting issues of violence and inequalities related to gender, class and race, while providing a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence, evolution, scale and trends of harm.

At openDemocracy since June 2022, an international feminist media outlet based in London, Angelina has documented threats to the bodies, territories, and rights of women and LGBTQ+ people, amplifying the voices of those who often go unheard.

This work includes reportage on how feminist activists in Chile pulled off a significant victory against pollution in the area nicknamed "the Chilean Chernobyl", located in the country’s central region. She has also covered feminist fights for abortion rights and resistance against conservative advances in international organisations.

One of her most notable recent investigations, “Disappeared in Uruguay: 30 Years of State Neglect in the Face of Evidence of Sex Trafficking,” explored the impact of organised crime, corruption, and institutional negligence on young, vulnerable women and their families in Uruguay.

In 2024, this work earned her the Marcelo Jelen National Print Journalism Award in Uruguay and a spot among the finalists for international awards such as the One World Media Awards in the New Voice category and the Festisov Journalism Awards in the Outstanding Investigative Reporting category.
